Sunscreen for sun lovers
Sunscreens for the face and body are essential to ensure a beautiful day in the sun doesn’t turn into a nightmare. Today, sun protection products come in all imaginable textures – from classic sunscreen creams to lotions, tanning oils, gels, water sprays, as well as sticks and roll-on sun protection.
When should you use sunscreen?
Even though clothing blocks part of the sun’s rays, it’s important to properly apply sunscreen to exposed areas. Sunscreen should also be used in everyday life – for example, during a stroll through the city, people often forget to apply it. In the evening, the result is usually obvious: a red neck and red shoulders. Modern, high-quality sunscreens are no longer sticky or unpleasant to apply, so there is no excuse anymore for not protecting your skin from sun damage!
Correct use of sunscreen
We all think we know how to apply sunscreen correctly. In theory. But how about in practice? It’s not only important to use sun protection, but also to use it properly. Using too little sunscreen dramatically reduces its protective effect.
As a rule of thumb, you need about 3 tablespoons of sunscreen for the entire body of an adult. After swimming, heavy sweating or towel-drying, you should always reapply the sunscreen or spray.
Every skin has its own self-protection time. This indicates how long you can stay in the sun before redness or sunburn occurs. This time varies individually depending on skin type, tanning level and the intensity of the sun’s rays. During this self-protection time, sunscreen must be reapplied regularly, especially to the face.
How long are you protected with sunscreen?
Depending on your skin type and the SPF level, there is a simple formula to calculate how many minutes you can safely stay in the sun while protected:
Here is the text without bullet points:
Example: If you have fair skin, your self-protection time is about 15 minutes. Choosing SPF 15 means your protected sun time is 15 × 15 minutes = 225 minutes, or about 3 hours and 45 minutes. During this period, sunscreen must be reapplied regularly to protect the skin from redness and sunburn. Note: This time is shorter if your skin is not yet tanned.
Approximate self-protection times of the skin:
- Very fair skin: 5–10 minutes
- Fair skin: 10–20 minutes
- Sun-sensitive skin: 10–20 minutes
- Medium brown skin: 15–25 minutes
- Dark skin: 20–30 minutes
- Deeply tanned or naturally dark skin: up to 90 minutes
- For children in general: 10 minutes
If you’ve overdone it in the sun, then after-sun care is essential. If you’re dealing with sunburn, we have some recommendations for you in the article Sunburn: What to do?.
Mineral sunscreen – what is it?
Did you know that there is a difference between chemical and mineral sunscreens? While chemical filters protect the skin by transforming UV radiation into heat, mineral filters are a natural alternative. The cream contains UV filters that occur in nature as minerals. These minerals reflect the radiation before it can penetrate the skin.
All Lancaster sun protection products contain a combination of chemical and mineral UV filters to provide the best possible protection. Especially with higher protection levels, combinations of different filters offer the most effective defense against UVB and UVA rays.
Sunscreen without octocrylene and other chemical UV filters
The Lancaster Sun Sensitive line contains no octocrylene, oxybenzone, homosalate, or octinoxate filters. These are chemical UV filters that can penetrate the body through the skin, potentially trigger allergies, or are suspected of interfering with metabolic processes. For this reason, Lancaster has deliberately chosen not to use these chemical UV filters in the Sun Sensitive series.
Sunscreen test: Which one is best for you?
At BellAffair, we swear by Lancaster sunscreens. Which one is best for you depends on your skin type and your skin’s needs. Depending on that, you can follow these guidelines.
- Oily skin: If you have oily skin, you should avoid comedogenic formulas, as these can increase oiliness in the T-zone and lead to blackheads. We recommend Lancaster Sun Sport Face Invisible Gel SPF30 for the face.
- Normal skin: If you have normal skin, you can choose freely. You don’t need to pay attention to any special requirements.
- Dry skin: If your skin is dry, it needs a moisturizing sunscreen such as a sun oil, for example Lancaster Fast Tan Satin Dry Oil.
- Sensitive skin: With sensitive skin, you should choose sunscreens without alcohol, perfume, or preservatives so as not to irritate the skin further. Tip: Lancaster Sun Sensitive for sensitive skin.
- Wrinkles & pigment spots: For mature skin types prone to wrinkles and pigmentation, we recommend Lancaster Sun Perfect. This sunscreen combats signs of aging and restores radiance to the skin.
Sunscreen for the face vs. sunscreen for the body
Using the same sunscreen for both your body and your face? Better not! Facial sunscreen is different from body sunscreen. It is formulated to meet the needs of delicate facial skin and absorbs more quickly. It is lightweight and has a creamy consistency that allows more precise and targeted application.
Body sunscreen is richer and greasier, which can increase sebum production on the face and lead to breakouts. Facial sunscreen is less heavy and designed to care for the skin while protecting it. Additional advantages of facial sunscreen include:
- Contains fewer spreading agents, which are not desirable around the sensitive mucous membrane areas of the face
- Provides hydration
- Can have an anti-aging effect
- Can be enriched with hyaluronic acid and or vitamins
Sunscreen for the face: This is how important it really is!
Dermatologists’ golden rule for summer: always use sunscreen on your face! But facial sunscreen is not only important in summer – it matters all year round. Unlike the body, the face is constantly exposed to UV radiation without protection. This is why sun protection for the face is essential and necessary regardless of the season.
The delicate skin on your face must be protected from the harmful effects of the sun. Who wants to end up later with a sun-leathered face and skin that looks like leather? Excessive sun exposure can cause exactly that. In addition, sun radiation can lead to skin cancer – so even if preventing or slowing down skin aging isn’t a strong enough reason to use sunscreen, preventing skin cancer definitely is.
Which facial sunscreen is best for everyday use?
A sunscreen with UV protection should be part of your daily skincare routine. There are various products available that can be tailored to your skin’s needs. Once you find the right facial sunscreen for you, applying sun protection every day can even become enjoyable: these smart skincare products are versatile and very pleasant to wear.

Which sunscreen is the best?
- Oily skin: Lancaster Sun Sport Face Invisible Gel SPF30 for the face
- Dry skin: Lancaster Fast Tan Satin Dry Oil
- Sensitive skin: Lancaster Sun Sensitive
- Wrinkles & pigmentation: Lancaster Sun Perfect
Is sunscreen good for the face?
Yes! Facial sunscreen protects the skin from sunburn and premature aging. The skin on the face is very thin and sensitive. UV rays damage skin cells and lead to early aging in the form of wrinkles, dark spots, hyperpigmentation, dryness, and loss of elasticity.
Which is better, SPF 30 or SPF 50?
The difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is not as big as the numbers suggest. SPF 50 should be used when getting your skin used to the sun or in special situations (ski trips or beach vacations). For everyday use, an SPF of 30 or 20 is sufficient.
Your skin will still tan with SPF 50 — just more slowly, but in a healthier and longer-lasting way, because it stays protected from the sun for longer. This reduces the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage.
