What is a texturizing scissor?
A texturizing scissor is a hair cutting scissor with teeth on one side only. The second blade is smooth. When using a texturizing scissor, only about half of the hair strands in a section are cut.
The texturizing scissor is mainly used for shaping transitions. Because not all hairs are cut, harsh transitions become smoother and more natural. Just like other scissors, texturizing scissors are available in different sizes, which are measured in inches.
Texturizing scissors can have different numbers of teeth. The larger the scissor, the fewer teeth it has on the cutting blade. The wider the teeth, the fewer hairs are removed. In skilled hands, a texturizing scissor can also be used to thin out hair, although a thinning scissor is generally better suited for that purpose.
Difference between texturizing and thinning scissors
Unlike texturizing scissors, thinning scissors have teeth on both blades. Therefore, most of the hair in a strand is not cut, as the scissor only captures about one-third of the hair. This makes it ideal for thinning out hair, which is why it is also called a thinning scissor. With a thinning scissor, the actual haircut remains intact — only the volume is reduced.
Here are the detailed differences between texturizing and thinning scissors:
Texturizing scissor
- Teeth on one side only
- Cuts about half of the hair
- Used for softening and blending transitions or for light thinning
Thinning scissor
- Teeth on both sides
- Cuts about one-third of the hair
- Used for thinning and reducing volume
- Maintains the hair length
Using a texturizing scissor
Hairdressers use texturizing scissors to shape a haircut and to thin out the hair. Thinning helps the hair fall more naturally, which is particularly beneficial for thick hair as it creates a softer and lighter look.
For short hairstyles or fine hair, texturizing scissors are mainly used to blend transitions in layered cuts. This visually adds more volume and gives the haircut a more natural appearance.
Texturizing scissors are also used for bangs. Because not all hairs are cut, they create the typical slightly fringed look that is essential for a natural-looking fringe.
How to use texturizing scissors for the most common techniques:
- To thin out hair: Take a strand in your hand, hold the scissor at an angle (working strand by strand results in a more precise and attractive outcome).
- To reduce volume: Hold the scissor at an angle and cut into the hair every two to three centimeters.
The most important thing when it comes to a texturizing scissor is quality. If the scissor is not of good quality, the ends of the hair can become frayed. This not only looks unappealing but also damages the hair over time. Therefore, it is crucial to choose a high-quality texturizing scissor.
