The Beginnings of Paul Mitchell
When John Paul DeJoria and Paul Mitchell founded the company in 1980 with $700 starting capital, this was hardly foreseeable. The classics from this era are still available and remain bestsellers today: Shampoo One, Shampoo Two and The Conditioner. A few months later, the Hair Sculpting Lotion was also launched as the brand’s first styling product. To this day, the Styling Lotion is a must-have product among top stylists.
The Paul Mitchell Brand Today
Today John Paul DeJoria, his daughter Michaeline DeJoria and Angus Mitchell (Paul Mitchell’s son) run the company. Even after Paul Mitchell’s death in 1989, the company was never sold and has remained true to its principles. To this day, salon-exclusive hair care products of the highest quality are manufactured in Santa Clarita, California. From conception to final product, chemists and product developers work hand in hand.
Paul Mitchell Ingredients: Environmental Protection, Animal Welfare and Social Commitment
Paul Mitchell stands for so much more than hair care and styling. The ingredients of the products are carefully selected. The formulations are continuously developed and improved. Some of the most proven ingredients are:

Sustainably sourced keratin from sheep fleece
Oil fractions from tea tree, marula, lavender, grape seed, jojoba and peppermint
Shea butter
Aloe vera
Extracts from algae and meadow clover
Bush plum
Pea peptides

Is Paul Mitchell vegan?
There is a wide range of vegan products, with effective hair cosmetics the brand has always had to balance environmental responsibility. As early as the late eighties, Paul Mitchell and John Paul DeJoria committed to careful use of natural resources. Since then, the use of various animal-derived products has been consciously avoided.
Is Paul Mitchell cruelty-free?
As early as 1989, Paul Mitchell became the first hair care company to explicitly oppose animal testing.
The PETA statement against animal testing was signed, and the company has not tested on animals to this day. It is regarded as a pioneer in cruelty-free hair care. Therefore, the products are not sold in countries that require animal testing.
“We have never done it and we will never do it! We have been cruelty-free from the start and are therefore a pioneer of the industry. We are very proud of this.”
Is Paul Mitchell natural cosmetics?
Paul Mitchell is not considered natural cosmetics, as the ingredients are not of 100% natural origin. The brand, however, places great emphasis on protecting the environment, animals, and fellow humans during the production of its products. All products are cruelty-free and some are also vegan.
Is Paul Mitchell silicone-free?
No, Paul Mitchell is not silicone-free. However, only silicones are used that do not build up on the hair and can be washed out easily. Silicones play an important role in hair care products, they keep the hair soft, manageable and shiny.
Environmental protection through more sustainable Paul Michtell packaging
The packaging of the Tea Tree series is made from PCR plastic. Post Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastic is plastic packaging from commercial or household waste. This means that these packages have already served their purpose once and are reprocessed again.
The packaging of the Clean Beauty line is made from alternative materials, such as bio-based plastic from sugarcane, a renewable raw material.
Paul Mitchell's Social Engagement
For the company behind Paul Mitchell, it is a matter of the heart to take responsibility and give something back. Worldwide, many charitable initiatives are supported, such as:
Amnesty International
Food 4 Africa

Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger
The sustainable, guided and solar-powered Awapuhi Farm in Hawaii was founded as early as 1983 and still supplies the valuable white ginger for the famous Awapuhi Shampoo.
With the introduction of hair products containing Hawaiian ginger, Paul Mitchell took the hairdressing industry by storm. Following the success of the original Awapuhi Products, the Awapuhi Wild Ginger line was launched in 2010, with products specifically for dry and damaged hair.
Paul Mitchell Invisiblewear for more structure and volume
For all fans of the popular #nofilter beauty trend, invisiblewear is exactly right. The products contain amaranth and make the hair smooth, structured and voluminous. This creates uncomplicated, modern undone looks.

Beautiful hair should not come at the expense of animals or the environment. Therefore, Paul Mitchell has launched the Clean Beauty Series. The products are 100% vegan. Packaging is made from bio-based plastic. The ingredients are largely organic plant extracts. The line is divided into four categories:

Clean Beauty Scalp Therapy for dry, oily or sensitive scalps
Clean Beauty Style for the finish
Paul Mitchell Blonde for bleached hair
Bleached hair has special needs that are addressed with Paul Mitchell Blonde. The line is divided into Forever Blonde products, which moisturise bleached hair and protect against breakage, and Platinum Blonde products, which neutralise yellow tones and make blonde shine with a cool colour glow. With Paul Mitchell Platinum Plus there are two further blonde care products that better correct yellow- and gold-toned hues and provide moisture. For an unshowy blonde refinement.
Paul Mitchell Bond Rx: End hair break!
Prone, brittle and damaged hair is optimally cared for with Paul Mitchell Bond Rx. The hair structure is restored from within by linking weakened and chemically damaged disulfide bridges in the hair.
Paul Mitchell Color Care for colour-treated hair
Those with coloured hair mainly want to protect the colour from fading. The Paul Mitchell Color Care products create a glossy, freshly-looking hair colour using sunflower extracts.
Paul Mitchell Curls for curly hair
Curls mainly need one thing: plenty of moisture. Shampoo, conditioner, leave-in treatment and styling products from Paul Mitchell Curls care for curly hair, provide bounce and combat frizz.
Paul Mitchell Extra-Body for fine hair
The products from Paul Mitchell Extra-Body give tired fine hair new life. They provide a voluminous, full hair with the help of panthenol without roughening the cuticle.
Paul Mitchell Smoothing for unruly hair
Hair that cannot be tamed can quickly become a misery. The products from Paul Mitchell Smoothing provide remedy. The smoothing effect means frizz has no chance even with strong natural curls.
Product tip: especially popular is the Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum, simply applied to the hair as a leave-in product.
Paul Mitchell Moisture for dry hair
Dry hair looks dull, brittle and lacklustre. With Paul Mitchell Moisture this condition is ended. The hair care products provide the necessary moisture boost so dry hair becomes shiny and smooth again.
Paul Mitchell Strength for weak, damaged hair
Weak, damaged hair is strengthened deeply with Paul Mitchell Strength and protected from further external influences. The blend of plant extracts from nettle, watercress and wild cherry makes the hair 50% stronger than before.
