Dry Shampoos: More Than Just Dry Care

Dry shampoo is a very versatile hair product that no bathroom should be without.

Dry Shampoo for Oily Hair and Unpleasant Odors

Similar to a hair powder, dry shampoo absorbs excess oil while also masking odors. Depending on the brand and product, it provides different pleasant scents. Davines Hair Refresher smells like lemon, while Kérastase Fresh Affair Refreshing Dry Shampoo has a neroli fragrance.

Dry Shampoo as a Styling Spray

Dry shampoo can also be used as a styling spray right after washing your hair. It gives the hair more texture, adds volume, and helps hairstyles hold better.

Dry Shampoo with Pigments Matched to Your Hair Color

Nowadays, there are even dry shampoos with color pigments for blonde, brunette, and dark hair. The latest products leave no residue when applied correctly.

Dry Shampoo as Foam or Spray – That’s the Question

Dry shampoo comes in foam or spray form. The spray can be applied like a hairspray, while the foam is massaged into the roots like a shampoo. Both textures deliver the same result: refreshed hair.

Dry Shampoo with a Nourishing Effect

Many dry shampoos even contain nourishing ingredients such as Vitamin E, found in Kérastase Fresh Affair Refreshing Dry Shampoo, which provides extra moisture to the hair. Schwarzkopf Blondme Blonde Wonders Dry Shampoo for blondes even rebuilds new fiber bonds in the hair thanks to its 3D Bonding Technology.

Advantages of Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo is currently experiencing a major revival — and rightly so, because the new, lightweight formulas have little in common with the heavy powders of the past.

After application, hair looks fresh and well-groomed — all without water. Here are some additional advantages of dry shampoo:

  • More volume
  • More smoothness, grip, and structure
  • Styling aid for very fine or freshly washed hair
  • Easy and uncomplicated to use
  • Instant effect
  • Fine hair? No problem: with dry shampoo, your hair becomes instantly grippier and gains volume.
  • Flyaway hair right after washing? Dry shampoo tames flyaway hairs.
  • Your hairstyle won’t hold? Dry shampoo makes your hair grippier.
  • Your fringe needs texture? Dry shampoo gives it more structure.

How Does Dry Shampoo Work?

Dry shampoo is applied to the dry roots and massaged in. There, it absorbs excess sebum and impurities with the help of absorbent ingredients. Afterward, the product is brushed out, and the hair feels light, clean, and fresh again.

Dry shampoo can be used not only to refresh oily or dirty hair but also to add more grip to freshly washed hair.

Ingredients of Dry Shampoos

In the early days, dry shampoos were often criticized as pure chemical bombs — but that has changed. Nowadays, their base is usually very simple. The products consist of an oil-absorbing powder and a distribution mechanism. The following ingredients are commonly present and highly effective:

  • Aluminum Salt (Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate) effectively absorbs excess oil and can be easily brushed out.
  • Rice Starch (Oryza Sativa Starch) absorbs impurities well and, as a natural ingredient, is environmentally safe.
  • Silica (Silica or Silica Dimethyl Silylate) provides volume.

With or Without Propellants

By using propellants, the formulas can be distributed more evenly — many users prefer this method. For those who value environmental awareness, a dry shampoo without propellants, such as Maria Nila Cleansing Powder, is the better choice. It is applied to the hair with fingertips or a brush. The risk of inhaling fine particles is also lower since they don’t circulate as much in the air during application.

Is Dry Shampoo Harmful to Hair?

In general, using dry shampoo is not harmful to the hair. However, constant use is not ideal, as a proper hair wash with water and care products cannot be replaced by powder. For a quick refresh in between washes, though, it’s highly recommended!

Our Recommendation: Dry shampoo should be used for a maximum of two consecutive days to keep the hair healthy and allow the hair follicles to breathe.

How to Use Dry Shampoo

  • Shake the can well and then spray onto the roots from about 30 cm away in short bursts.
  • It’s best to work section by section and keep shaking the can in between.
  • Then let the product sit for 2–3 minutes so the powder can absorb excess sebum and other residues.
  • Gently massage it in with your fingers and brush thoroughly. Brushes with natural bristles are especially suitable for this, as they are gentler on the hair.
  • For curly hair, it’s often enough to work it in well with your fingers to avoid disrupting the curl pattern.
  • Even for brown or dark hair, using it is no longer a problem — shampoos now leave far less of a white powdery residue.
  • For more grip and volume, it can also be used on freshly washed hair. First, dry the hair as usual and then spray it into the roots and lengths. Be careful — the hair will appear matte!

Expert Tip: Spray dry shampoo on the day you wash your hair, right before going to bed. This way, excess oil is absorbed by the powder before it can spread through the roots overnight.

Can dry shampoo replace regular hair washing?

Dry shampoo is ideal for bridging and extending the time between two washes, helping you save time in between. However, in the long run, it cannot replace a “real” hair wash with water and care products.
