What is a hair tint?

Unlike hair dyes, hair tints are completely washable and are a bit gentler on the hair than permanent colorations.

Tints come in different levels – from short-term color changes that wash out quickly to more intense products that last for several weeks. They also enhance the color of permanently dyed hair. Lighter tints typically last for about eight washes, after which they are fully washed out. With each wash, the color pigments fade more and more.

New standards are constantly being set in terms of color. If you’re not 100% sure whether a trendy color suits you, you can safely try a tint instead, as it doesn’t have to be a permanent dye.

Tints are also a great alternative for people who like to experiment with colors and hairstyles and don’t want to commit to a color permanently. Those who want to try a new shade without much risk will benefit from tinting. Enhancing the natural hair tone highlights personality in a particularly natural and fresh way.

What is a direct-acting tint?

A tint usually contains direct dyes that do not penetrate very deeply into the hair and are therefore easier to wash out.

Different Shades: What Hair Tints Are Available?

From blonde to brown and black to red – just like with permanent hair color, hair tints come in all kinds of shades. The advantage is that the color washes out after some time, allowing you to experiment more boldly and maybe even go a little deeper into the color palette.

It is important to note that hair cannot be lightened with a tint. This is only possible with bleaching, which is always permanent. Here is a summary of the most popular tints for you:

Ash Blonde Tint

Ash blonde is an absolute trend shade for blonde hair. The natural tone, once disparagingly called “street dog blonde,” is now fully in style. Unlike other blonde shades, this tint looks very natural and elegant. The shade is also popular for highlights and balayage.

Tint vs. Intensive Tint: What’s the Difference?

Tints generally last for about 8 washes. So-called intensive tints can last up to 24 washes. After this period, even these are fully washed out.

Tinting Hair at Home

If you want to give your hair a slightly different tone or simply refresh the color, tinting at home is generally low-risk. For a complete change of look, however, it’s a bit different. To avoid color mishaps or damaged hair, it’s often worth visiting a professional even when using tints.

Tips for Tinting at Home:

  • Usually, tints are applied to dry hair
  • Carefully read and follow the instructions on the package
  • For very long hair, you may need two boxes for even coverage
  • Wear an old t-shirt and drape an old towel over your shoulders
  • Use disposable gloves and a dye brush for application
  • After applying, comb through with a wide-tooth comb to distribute the color evenly to the ends
  • Wipe any color from your face, neck, and forearms with a damp cotton pad
  • After the recommended processing time, rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear

Hair Tint: Proper Care

To make the tint last longer, use the right hair care products. Choose products specifically designed for color-treated hair. Avoid deep-cleansing shampoos. Color masks like Wella Color Fresh Mask or Maria Nila Colour Refresh can further intensify and nourish the color.

Frequently Asked Question

How Long Does a Tint Last?

A regular tint is not long-lasting because the color does not penetrate deeply into the hair structure. After about 8 washes, the color fades. Intensive tints last for approximately 24 washes.

How Damaging Is Tinting?

Tints are less damaging than permanent hair color because they do not penetrate deeply, but rather coat the hair like a film. However, they can still contain potentially harmful ingredients such as ammonia. When choosing a tint, it’s important to pay attention to the formulation.

Is a Hair Tint Washable?

Yes, tints typically wash out after about 8 washes.
