Steam Straightener: Does it live up to the hype?
Have you ever heard of a styling tool that claims not to damage your hair but actually cares for it? A straightener that uses steam and even repairs brittle strands? The new Steampod from L'Oréal—a steam straightener—is being highly praised by many bloggers on social media. Why? Let's show you!
What Is a Steam Straightener?
As the name suggests, a steam straightener works with water vapor. Conventional straighteners continuously emit heat during use, whereas a steam straightener releases a steady flow of steam to shape the hair. With both types of devices, the temperature can be individually adjusted to suit the hair’s structure. Many modern models also come with various attachments, allowing every hair type—even very curly hair—to be perfectly straightened.
To ensure heat is distributed evenly throughout the hair, most steam straighteners are equipped with high-quality ceramic plates, which also provide optimal protection for the hair. Previously stressed, damaged, or brittle hair can look healthy and strong again after using a steam straightener. Thanks to this particularly gentle technology, the result is shiny, radiant hair.
Which Hair Types Is a Steam Straightener Suitable For?
In general, a steam straightener is suitable for all hair types—whether naturally curly, slightly wavy, or particularly unruly hair. Anyone who desires shiny, silky hair can quickly and easily create a perfect look with a steam straightener. It doesn’t matter whether you prefer straight hair or curls, as a steam straightener can be used to create sleek styles as well as soft waves and curls.
Is a Steam Straightener Better for Your Hair?
Short and sweet: yes. The released steam helps style and straighten the hair more gently. In addition, the steam allows the nourishing ingredients of styling products applied beforehand to penetrate deeper into the hair fiber.
Advantages of a steam straightener:
- Gentler hair straightening
- Less frizz
- Long-lasting results
- Reduced hair damage
Disadvantages of a steam straightener:
- Heavier weight due to the filled water tank
- Steam straighteners are larger and bulkier than conventional straighteners
Steam Straightener – My Personal Experience
L’Oréal Steampod 3.0
Since the Steampod 3.0 has been highly praised by celebrities and Instagram bloggers alike, I simply had to test it myself. My verdict: the steam straightener truly lives up to its promises! Beautiful, shiny, and above all perfectly straightened hair. I personally have blonde-dyed hair that is partly slightly straw-like and, above all, very thick—especially hard to tame in the morning.
That’s why I use a straightener almost every day to get my hair into shape. Whether curls or a sleek look: I honestly think I couldn’t live without a straightener anymore. Sorry, let me correct that: I couldn’t live without a steam straightener anymore! Since testing the L’Oréal Steampod 3.0, I’m officially a steam straightener fan. Perfectly straightened hair that looks healthy and has a beautiful shine—what more could you want? On top of that, my hair is straightened about 10 minutes faster than with a conventional straightener.
By using the L’Oréal Steampod Smoothing Concentrate after washing my hair, my hair is optimally protected thanks to the integrated heat protection and perfectly prepared for heat styling with the restructuring smoothing cream it contains.
Another highlight of the L’Oréal Professionnel Steampod is the integrated comb, which can also be removed if needed. Gone are the days when I had to use an additional tail comb to achieve a perfect result. Unlike the previous model, the water tank is now integrated directly into the straightener, which makes handling much easier. When fully filled, it even lasts for up to 192 meters of hair!
The only thing that bothers me slightly is the weight of the steam straightener. When the tank is filled, it is noticeably heavier than a conventional straightener. At first, I also had some issues with handling, as it is bulkier and larger. But as the saying goes, practice makes perfect! The initial awkwardness disappeared after just a few minutes, and you also get used to the weight over time.
L’Oréal Steampod 4.0 All-In-One Professional Styler
The L’Oréal Steampod 4.0 All-In-One Professional Styler is the latest generation of steam straighteners. In addition to the well-known Steampod features, it has larger plates and comes with three comb attachments designed for different hair types:
- Comb with fine teeth: hair types 1 to 4 (straight to wavy hair)
- Comb with medium teeth: hair type 5 (curly hair)
- Comb with wide teeth: hair types 6 and 7 (very curly to coily hair)
Strictly speaking, it’s no longer just a steam straightener, but a modern, versatile hair styler that even has a curling function! Thanks to the gentle heat of 100°C, it creates soft, long-lasting curls.
Application Tips
- After washing your hair, work the Steampod concentrate into damp hair
- Dry your hair as usual
- Fill the steam straightener with distilled water and allow it to heat up
- Brush the hair and divide it into sections
- Style the hair as usual. Important: for the steam to smooth the hair effectively, hold the Steampod so that the arrows on the steam straightener point downward
- Finish by applying a hair serum or hair oil
