Steam Hair Straightener: Does it live up to the hype?

Last updated: 08.04.2020 | by

Have you ever heard of a styling tool that does not damage the hair? A straightener with steam that is even able to repair and strengthen damaged hair? There’s a real hype around the new Steampod from L’Oréal in social media and bloggers sing praises on it. Why? We show you why!

Steam Hair Straightener L'Oréal

What is a steam hair straightener?

As the name suggests, a steam hair straightener works with steam. Normal straighteners use constant heat through their plates, while a steam straightener gives off steam constantly in order to shape the hair. Each version of a straightener usually allows for an individual temperature control, in order to adapt it to the individual hair type. In order to give off heat evenly, most steam straighteners are equipped with high-quality ceramic plates that also provide optimal protection for the hair. Hair that looked damaged and frazzled before, looks healthy, shiny and strong after using the steam hair straightener. The especially gentle method delivers shiny, silky hair.

Is a steam hair straightener suitable for all hair types?

A steam hair straightener is generally suitable for all hair types. No matter whether they are kinky, curly, wavy or especially unruly. If you dream of silky smooth, shiny hair, the steam straightener can help you achieve the look of your dreams. It doesn’t matter if you want a completely straight and smooth look, or create curls, you can do both - creating soft waves is no longer a problem with a steam hair straightener!

Is a steam hair straightener better for the hair?

Short and sweet: yes. The steam that is emitted helps to style and straighten the hair in a more gentle manner. Nourishing and repairing ingredients from styling and leave-in products can penetrate the hair better with the help of the steam.

Advantages of the steam hair straightener:

  • Gentle straightening of the hair
  • Less Frizz
  • Long-lasting results
  • Less damage to the hair

Disadvantages of a steam hair straightener:

    • Higher weight in comparison to a regular straightener due to the filled water tank
    • Steam straighteners are usually larger and a bit bulkier than regular straighteners

Steam hair straightener - my personal experiences and review:

As there is a real hype around the new L'Oréal Steampod 3.0 right now and every celebrity and influencer is talking about it, I really wanted to try it out as well. My result: the steam hair straightener keeps its promises! It delivered beautiful, shiny and perfectly straight hair!

My hair is bleached, somewhat dry and quite thick - it is especially hard to manage in the mornings. That’s why I use a straightener pretty much every day to tame my mane. No matter whether I want a sleek and straight look or curls - I think I can’t survive without my straightener. Scratch that, sorry - I actually thought I couldn’t live without my straightener, but in reality, I don’t want to do without my steam hair straightener now! Since I’ve tried the Steampod 3.0 from L’Oréal, I’ve been converted and can say that there’s a reason the product is so hyped up right now!

Perfectly straight hair that looks healthy and has a wonderful shine to it - what could you wish for more? Apart from the results, it takes me about 10 minutes less, to straighten my hair, than it did with a regular straightener. I also use the L’Oréal Steampod Cream for thick hair after every wash, which does not only nourish and strengthen my hair, it also protects it from heat damage.

Another thing I love about the L’Oréal Steampod is the integrated comb, which can be removed as well. This makes using a separate comb unnecessary, in order to create a perfect result. The new Steampod also has the water tank included in the handle, in contrast to the older models, which makes handling a lot more convenient. The full water tank makes it possible to straighten up to 192 meters of hair, which is quite a lot!

Tip: In order to let the steam effectively straighten the hair, you have to hold the Steampod with the arrows pointing downwards.

The only thing that bothers me a bit about the steam hair straightener is the weight. If the tank is full, the tool really feels quite a bit heavier than a regular straightener. In the beginning the handling also took a while to get used to, as it is a bit bigger and bulkier. But, as they say, practice makes perfect! After just a few minutes, I got used to the new feeling and handling and also the weight didn’t bother me as much anymore.

    How to use it:

    • After washing the hair, apply your styling products of choice to the damp hair (L’Oréal Steampod Milk for fine or thick hair)
    • Dry your hair as usual
    • Fill the steam hair straightener with distilled water and let it heat up
    • Brush the hair and section off
    • Style your hair as usual
    • Finish off with the L’Oréal Steampod Serum in order to give the hair a perfectly shiny, smooth look
