The Beginnings of Paul Mitchell
When John Paul DeJoria and Paul Mitchell founded the company in 1980 with $700 starting capital, few could have foreseen it. The classics from this era are still available and remain bestsellers today: Shampoo One, Shampoo Two and The Conditioner. A few months later, the Hair Sculpting Lotion was launched as the brand’s first styling product. To this day, the Styling Lotion remains a must-have product among top stylists.
The Paul Mitchell Brand Today
Today the company is led by John Paul DeJoria, his daughter Michaeline DeJoria and Angus Mitchell (Paul Mitchell’s son). Even after Paul Mitchell’s death in 1989, the company was never sold and has remained true to its principles. To this day, haircare products exclusive to hairdressers of the highest quality are manufactured in Santa Clarita, California. From concept to finished product, chemists and product developers work hand in hand.
Paul Mitchell Ingredients: Environmental Protection, Animal Welfare and Social Commitment
Paul Mitchell stands for much more than haircare and styling. The ingredients of the products are carefully selected. The formulations are continually developed and improved. Some of the well-established ingredients include:
Awapuhi
Abyssinian seawine
Sustainably sourced keratin from the fleece of sheep
Oils from tea tree, marula, lavender, grape seed, jojoba and peppermint
Shea butter
Aloe vera
Extracts from algae and clover
Firethorn
Pea peptides
Turmeric
Ginseng
Is Paul Mitchell vegan?
There is a wide range of vegan products, and effective hair cosmetics for the brand have always gone hand in hand with environmental responsibility. By the late eighties, Paul Mitchell and John Paul DeJoria committed to conscientious use of natural resources. Since then, the use of various animal-derived products has been deliberately avoided.
Is Paul Mitchell cruelty-free?
As early as 1989, Paul Mitchell, the first haircare company, explicitly spoke out against animal testing.
The PETA stance against animal testing has been signed, and the company has not tested on animals to this day. It is regarded as a pioneer in cruelty-free haircare. Therefore, the products are also not sold in countries that require animal testing.
“We have never done it, and we never will! We have been cruelty-free from the start and thus a pioneer of the industry. We are very proud of that.”
Is Paul Mitchell natural cosmetics?
Paul Mitchell is not considered natural cosmetics because the ingredients are not 100% natural in origin. However, the brand places great importance on protecting the environment, animals and fellow human beings in the production of its products. All products are cruelty-free, and some are also vegan.
Is Paul Mitchell silicone-free?
No, Paul Mitchell is not silicone-free. However, only silicones are used that do not build up on the hair and can be washed out easily. Silicones play an important role in hair care products; they leave the hair flexible, manageable, and shiny.
Environmental protection through more sustainable Paul Michtell packaging
The packaging of the Tea Tree series is made from PCR plastic. Post Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastic is plastic packaging from commercial or household waste. This means that these packaging materials have already served their purpose once and are processed again.
The packaging of the Clean Beauty series is made from alternative materials, such as bio-based plastic from sugarcane, a renewable source material.
Paul Mitchell's Social Engagement
For the company behind Paul Mitchell, taking responsibility and giving back is a matter close to heart. Globally, many charitable initiatives are supported, such as:
Amnesty International
Food 4 Africa
Eyes On Cancer
WWF
Reforest'Action
Morris Animal Foundation
Prostate Cancer Research Institute
Grow Appalachia
Paul Mitchell Schools Funraising
Boys & Girls Clubs of America
Brustkrebs Deutschland e.V.

Tea Tree Lemon Sage for more volume
Tea Tree Lavender Mint for dry, frizzy hair
Tea Tree Scalp Care for better hair growth
Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger
The sustainable, guided and solar-powered Awapuhi Farm in Hawaii was established in 1983 and still provides the precious white ginger for the famous Awapuhi Shampoo.
With the introduction of hair products containing Hawaiian ginger, Paul Mitchell stormed the salon industry. Following the success of the original Awapuhi Products, the Awapuhi Wild Ginger line was introduced in 2010, featuring products specifically for dry and damaged hair.
Paul Mitchell Invisiblewear for more structure and volume
For all fans of the trendy #nofilter beauty trend, invisiblewear is exactly right. The products contain amaranth and make the hair smooth, structured and voluminous. This creates uncomplicated, modern undone looks.
Paul Mitchell Clean Beauty: Good for our hair, good for our environment
For beautiful hair, neither animals nor the environment should suffer. Therefore Paul Mitchell launched the Clean Beauty Series. The products are 100% vegan. The packaging is made from bio-based plastic. The ingredients are largely organic plant extracts. The line is divided into four categories:
Clean Beauty Everyday for all hair types
Clean Beauty Hydrate for dry hair
Clean Beauty Smooth for unruly hair
Clean Beauty Repair for damaged hair
Clean Beauty Scalp Therapy for dry, oily or sensitive scalp
Clean Beauty Style for the finish
Paul Mitchell Blonde for bleached hair
Lightened hair has special needs that are met with Paul Mitchell Blonde. The line is divided into Forever Blonde products, which moisturise and protect bleached hair from breakage, and Platinum Blonde products, which neutralise yellow tones and let blonde shine with a cool gloss. With Paul Mitchell Platinum Plus there are two more blonde care products that further correct yellow- and golden-tinged tones and provide moisture. For a blonde refinement that is worth seeing.
Paul Mitchell Bond Rx: End hair breakage!
Prone to breakage, brittle and damaged hair is best cared for with Paul Mitchell Bond Rx. The hair structure is rebuilt from the inside by linking weakened and chemically damaged disulfide bonds in the hair.
Paul Mitchell Color Care for coloured hair
Those with coloured hair want to protect the colour primarily from fading. The Paul Mitchell Color Care products create a glossy, freshly-looking hair colour with the help of sunflower extracts.
Paul Mitchell Curls for curly hair
Curls mainly need one thing: enough moisture. Shampoo, conditioner, leave-in treatment and styling products from Paul Mitchell Curls care for curly hair, provide bounce and combat frizz.
Paul Mitchell Extra-Body for fine hair
The products from Paul Mitchell Extra-Body give tired fine hair new life. They provide voluminous fullness with the help of panthenol without roughening the cuticle.
Paul Mitchell Smoothing for unruly hair
Hair that simply cannot be tamed can quickly become a ordeal. The products from Paul Mitchell Smoothing provide relief. The smoothing effect leaves frizz with even strong natural curls no chance.
Product tip: Especially popular is the Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum, simply applied as a leave-in product into the hair.
Paul Mitchell Moisture for dry hair
Dry hair looks dull, brittle and lacklustre. With Paul Mitchell Moisture, this condition is ended. The hair care products provide the necessary moisture boost to make dry hair shine again and feel smooth.
Paul Mitchell Strength for weak, damaged hair
Weak, damaged hair is deeply strengthened and protected from further external influences with Paul Mitchell Strength. The blend of plant extracts from nettle, watercress and wild cherry makes the hair 50% stronger than before.
