Review ghd Gold Styler

Last updated: 19.02.2020 | by

After my old straightener stopped working for good, I thought long and hard about whether I should risk the investment and buy the new ghd Gold Styler. I’ve got long, curly hair that is quite dry in the ends, due to several balayage treatments. This already dry state was also a reason for me to look for a better quality straightener, so I would not cause further damage to my hair when I want to wear it straight. My hair also doesn’t stay straight easily and started to curl up again by the afternoon, when I used my old hair straightener in the morning.

After quite a lot of back and forth, I decided to take the plunge and went for the new ghd Gold Styler, as it promised to make and keep the hair smoother and straighter, thanks to the new dual-zone technology. Ghd also claims to keep the hair healthier, due to the fixed optimum temperature that is supposed to minimize heat damage.

What’s the temperature of the ghd Gold Styler?

The Gold Styler has a constant temperature of 185°C, that promises a long-lasting styling result with minimal damage. I was quite sceptical about this temperature at first because I had to use a higher temperature with my old straightener in order to get a really sleek and smooth result. Which in turn caused more damage to my hair than I liked. The technology used by ghd in combination with the high-quality plates does actually work really well – upon the first trial I could already see that my hair was smoother and sleeker than what I was used to. There was hardly a part of my hair that I had to go over several times, the first pass left many parts already perfectly straight and smooth. That was unknown to me! I also use the ghd heat protect spray now when straightening my hair, which does not leave it greasy and has a really good, fine mist. It also dries really quickly and smells good.

What’s the difference between the ghd Gold Styler and the V Gold Styler?

When researching the ghd Gold Styler, I also came across offers for the old V Gold Styler model and wondered if there was really a big difference. I was able to take a look at the older model at a friend’s place, who is really happy with it. The casing of the V Gold is a lot squarer and the plates are also not as rounded as in the new model – the new rounded shape of the ghd Gold Styler allows for easier kink-free styling than the old model did. The new one also has now two sensors instead of one, which ensures that the temperature is kept even more constant. I personally think that the new Gold Styler looks from the outside quite a lot like the Platinum Styler, just with a different hinge (the technology is a different one though).

Result of the ghd Gold on curly hair

Usually, my hair starts to curl up again at the ends after a few hours – using a large round brush to give them a straight-ish blow-dry and then using my old straightener didn’t tame them for very long. Fortunately, with the help of the new straightener, this is a thing of the past.

I don’t even have to use a round brush first anymore, in order to achieve a really sleek finish. After washing my hair, I apply a bit of , which helps with detangling and also makes the hair feel silky smooth. It also takes out quite a bit of volume, which I appreciate when I wear my hair straight.

After this step, I simply dry them and apply a heat protect spray. The spray dries pretty quickly and I make sure to quickly brush through my hair, to remove any leftover knots. As the last step, I straighten my hair section for section, which works really fast, as I hardly have to go over sections a second time.I also got myself the travel case from ghd that is made for their straighteners. It has a really practical, detachable heat protect mat, where I can put my hot Styler without being afraid of damaging my furniture.

The case is also perfect for storage and travelling with it, as I can easily fit one or two brushes into the case with it. The bag is quite well made – as you would expect of ghd – and perfectly protects your valuable device, because, who wants to scratch it?

One thing that I needed to get used to at first, was that the plates don’t completely close and are movable. In the end, this actually makes it much easier for the hair to glide through the plates. A friend of mine who is a stylist showed me how to properly use the ghd Styler – you need to slightly tilt the plates.

This way you straighten the hair over the rounded edges, which works perfectly and super easy, as soon as you get the hang of this slightly different technique.

But now to the result- does the hair stay straight longer?
Yes! They are smoother and sleeker from the get-go and have a beautiful shine. The hairstyle lasts the whole day and even the next morning I only have to rework a few parts. Steam in the shower is surely not a helping factor in keeping the hair straight. For me the result is perfect - the–amount of time it takes me to style my hair straight and keep it that way for a few days is greatly reduced. Less heat also means less damage to my hair – so this is definitely a win-win situation!

A little bonus is also that I never have the “omg, did I turn off the straightener?!” moment again – the Gold Styler turns itself off after 30 minutes, in case you ever really forget to do so.
